About Patsull Reserve

The Patshull Project is a joint initiative between the West Midland Bird Club and Belvide Ringers, launched in 2020 at the request of the Mercer family, new owners of the estate. The aim: to measure and enhance the estate’s value for birds and wildlife through structured ecological surveys and habitat improvements. Initial work included:

  • Spring census of Skylark breeding pairs

  • Analysis of hedgerows and woodlands as breeding habitats

  • Summer breeding bird survey

  • Winter bird monitoring, including diurnal ringing and nocturnal thermal imaging techniques

The project has brought together a strong team of WMBC and Belvide Ringers volunteers alongside enthusiastic local residents, forming a powerful community-driven conservation model. Practical support has included:

  • Installation of owl boxes, Kestrel boxes, and nest baskets

  • Creation of winter seed hoppers

  • A growing programme of long-term monitoring and habitat management

Over 350 volunteer hours were logged in the first year alone, with the project continuing to evolve as a valuable site for conservation, research, and local engagement.
