Minute Secretary
Justine Wilson

Favourite Bird: Peregrine Falcon
Favourite Birdwatching Spot: Wyre Forest
I have been a birder since my childhood after inheriting my love of birds from my dad. Professionally, I worked for a private banking group for 33 years and was made redundant in Feb 22 - a blessing in disguise! This allowed more time for my birding and also the opportunity to volunteer for the RSPB, which began in March 2022 and am still currently enjoying. I am part of our newly formed Ladybirders Team and love getting out and about birding with our group of ladies.

Membership Secretary
Leanne Wood

Favourite Bird: Puffin
Favourite Birdwatching Spot: RSPB Bempton Cliffs
I have had an interest in birds and wildlife from a young age, but my enthusiasm for birdwatching really took off after my husband persuaded me to visit WWT Slimbridge one day - and I was immediately hooked. I have been a member of WMBC for the past three years and became Membership Secretary at the 2026 AGM. Professionally, I have worked as an office manager for approximately 20 years and felt that the organisational and administrative skills I have developed throughout my career could be put to good use in supporting the club and its members.

Newsletter Editor
Liz Clipson

Favourite Bird: Common Eider
Favourite Birdwatching Spot: Belvide
Working for the NHS as a Clinical Scientist means that birding is a hobby that enables decompression from what can be a somewhat high pressure work life. Since 2013, I have actively taken a true interest in birds rather than an all round nature lover from a childhood in Norfolk. In 2019 I became the WMBC Newsletter Editor which allows some creative flare and it was in 2019 in which I started training to become a BTO licenced ringer. As a scientist, learning things about bird's anatomy and things like moult strategy really gets the brain working, feeds the dopamine and has helped me become a better birder overall.

Blithfield Reserve Manager
Mark Sumnall

Favourite Bird: Red Kite
Favourite Birdwatching Spot: Wherever I am
Historically more of a fisherman, I joined the WMBC three years ago when I retired from full time work. Having some spare time to offer to a good cause, I started looking after Blithfield two years ago and was then fortunate to be able to join the board of trustees in 2024. I still have a huge amount to learn about birds, but certainly feel I am in the right place to build my knowledge Having trained in Mechanical and Production engineering, I have spent over 35 years in business. I have set up a business, been a shareholder and board director in a second business and for 18 years been the Head of UK Sales / Marketing for a multi €bn global German company, providing vacuum solutions to a broad range of industries. I have managed Group companies in Eire and the UK acting as General Manager. Currently, I am a self-employed consultant for my immediate previous employer taking the technical and commercial lead for a project within the nuclear industry.

Harborne Reserve Manager
Paul Bateman

Favourite Bird: Ring Ouzel
Favourite Birdwatching Spot: Wyre Forest in late April/early May
In the decades prior to 1994 I had always been keen on the great outdoors and took part in regular walks and mountain trekking all over the UK and beyond without actually paying attention to the wildlife around me. In that year I visited Norway as part of a group where one was a keen birdwatcher and that was where I appreciated the beauty of noticing what surrounded you and haven't looked back since. In 1995 I started volunteering at Harborne where Derek Brown was the Manager. In 2007 he retired and I became the Reserve manager and still am.

Ladywalk Reserve Manager
Richard King

Favourite Bird: Nightjar
Favourite Birdwatching Spot: Ynys Hir
I have been keen on birds and bird watching since aged about eight when I have a memory of appreciating a Blue Tit in our front garden. There was the Young Ornithologists' Club to join and I benefitted from the RSPB Local Leaders' Scheme where my brother and I were taken to numerous meetings of the Hampshire Field Club, mainly to the coast. I learnt so much from all those meetings with adult birders, and this continued with the Trent Valley Bird Watchers during my Nottingham University days and WMBC which I joined in about 1975. With retirement in 2014 I have been able to devote time to volunteering at several reserves, notably Ladywalk as well as gardening at NT Baddesley Clinton and my allotment. I am definitely a birder, not a twitcher!

I have always really liked birds but I've never been what you would call a birder until the last few years. I retired after 26 years as a civilian police dispatcher to look after my dad. After he passed away I began birding and I've not looked back. When out birding alone at Ladywalk I decided it would be a good idea to start a ladies birding group and so I contacted WMBC and LadyBirders was formed. It has grown so quickly and it's such an amazing group of ladies. I can't quite believe it has been so successful but I'm loving every minute of it!

Independent Trustees
Chair of Trustees
John Macmillan

Favourite Bird: Sabine's Gull
Favourite Birdwatching Spot: North Norfolk Coast
I have had a life-long interest in birds, and many years' experience as a trustee of wildlife charities. In the 1970s I was the RSPB volunteer local rep for Burton upon Trent and started the Burton local members group. From the 1980s onwards I spent over 20 years (in two blocks) as a trustee of the Staffordshire Wildlife Trust and 11 years as the Hon Sec of the Royal Society for Nature Conservation (now the Royal Society of Wildlife Trusts). I played a leading role in creating the Wildlife Trusts’ national role and profile. I have been a trustee of WMBC since October 2018 and a member for about 30 years. Professionally, I was a solicitor for 18 years and an Employment Judge for 30, including 15 years as Regional (i.e. Senior) judge for the East Midlands.

I am originally from Northern Ireland, where I started to birdwatch as a child. I have lived for most of my adult life in the West Midlands. I have been a member of the WMBC for over 30 years. Having retired 2 years ago, I wanted to contribute to the Club I have previous experience of charity management with the Alpine Garden Society, where I was a committee member and Director of Tours for a number of years. I was a solicitor by profession. I worked for the Crown Prosecution Service for over 30 years. I have recently moved from Solihull, close to Earlswood Lakes, to Abbots Bromley, close to Blithfield.

Independent Trustee
Colin McShane

Favourite Bird: Storm Petrel
Favourite Birdwatching Spot: Belvide
I can’t remember a time when I was not interested in birds. My interest turned into passion in the mid 70swhen I was taken on my first twitch (Lesser Scaup at Chasewater), and I experienced bird ringing at Dungeness BO. My secondary biology teaching career gave me lots of opportunities to pass on some of that passion by taking students on lots of trips, mainly to Scottish islands. For about 30 years I took field courses to Lundy Island where, in April 1987 I was lucky enough to find an Eastern Phoebe-a first for Britain and Europe. I also became a committee member and eventually Newsletter editor of the Lundy Field Society. After teaching I took several senior education officer roles with LEAs which eventually led to my appointment to a small Audit Commission team producing reports for ministers on the performance of education authorities. This type of work has, I believe put me in a good position to carry out my current independent trustee role for the WMBC

Independent Trustee
Martin Smith

Favourite Bird: Red Kite
Favourite Birdwatching Spot: RSPB Middleton Lakes
Whilst always having a broad interest in nature, particularly birds, I only came to birding after my retirement in 2018, I joined the RSPB (where I carried out volunteer duties) and the WMBC. My learning curve was steep (and still climbing) and gained much of my birding knowledge talking to members (now friends). It’s a joyful experience to be out in nature with friends, sharing great birding experiences. I became an Independent Trustee in 2024, aiming to strengthen and advance the clubs progress. I spent my working life with GKN Plc (A global Engineering company), initially as an Apprentice, then Engineer, latterly in Senior (Director) positions in Operations Management. I’ve had the privilege of working and living in Malaysia, Singapore, Thailand and India. My last working role was the GKN groups Health, Safety and Environment Director.

A Note on Governance
Responsibility for the Club rests with its Trustees, as with most charities. There are two types:

-
Executive Trustees – who serve on the Executive Committee and are involved in day-to-day management
-
Independent Trustees – who are separate from daily operations and ensure the Club is run in line with its constitution and charity law
All trustees are elected by members, though Independent Trustees may be co-opted on a short-term basis until the next AGM, at which point they must stand for election.
The Executive Committee manages the Club’s daily operations under delegated authority from the Trustees, with some decisions requiring Trustee ratification.
Most committee members are elected at the AGM, but the committee may also co-opt additional people to support its work. Each branch and reserve elects a representative to sit on the committee.
Running the Club is a team effort - from governance and committee roles to volunteers on the ground. If you’d like to get involved, please visit Volunteering to find out more.
