About Wildgoose Reserve
Wildgoose Reserve is a 19-hectare post-industrial landscape transformed into a diverse and developing nature reserve. Once a sand and gravel quarry, the site now features reedbeds, woodland, scrub, flower-rich grassland, shallow open water, settling ponds, embankments and tracks - all supporting a growing variety of wildlife.
The reserve is managed by Wildgoose Rural Training (WGRT) staff, students and volunteers, with support from community work parties. The focus is on enhancing habitat diversity to encourage long-term biodiversity across the site.
Wildgoose maintains strong partnerships with the West Midland Bird Club and the local RSPB group. WMBC supports conservation through initiatives such as:
-
Nestbox and breeding bird surveys
-
Habitat infrastructure projects including ponds, gates and access improvements
There is also a long-standing bird ringing programme, coordinated by the active Wildgoose Ringing Group, with findings reported in the site's ecological data.
Access to the reserve is shared between the public and WMBC members. While general visitors can enjoy the designated paths during regular opening hours, WMBC members benefit from extended access to the Conservation Area.
