Avian Influenza at Blithfield - please read

Dear members, please see comments from SSW re the death of a couple of Swans at Blithfield

If you want to reach out to me with any sightings or questions please just let me know

Good morning Mark,

Many thanks for your email regarding the dead swans.

These were reported to DEFRA on 26th August and they were supposed to be sending someone out to bag, tag and record the birds. I will report to them again today to chase this. A Member of the WMBC, Bob Wharton, called in the deaths and explained that he sometimes works with DEFRA Uttoxeter office to carry out the task of double-bagging dead birds for them.

In the meantime, please could we ask that Members of the WMBC are reminded not to approach or touch dead or dying birds unless asked to do so by DEFRA – suitable protection must be worn if doing so including a filtered face mask and disposable gloves (to be bagged and binned appropriately). All clothing should be washed as soon as they return home.

However, we encourage Members to report to DEFRA themselves and to share information as they have done in this case and which we greatly appreciate.

Unfortunately, as you know,  Avian Influenza is a difficult virus to control and we have had cases here previously, particularly amongst a population of Black-Headed Gulls. Despite our best efforts with biosecurity we are likely to see further cases.

Thanks again for your email and for sharing the information.

Best Wishes,

Claire
