Beginner Walks

At the Harborne reserve there will be two guided walks aimed at beginners/ new members on both March 7th and 14th commencing at 10am. The walks will take about an hour and a half. The rendezvous point will be the gate off the Harborne Walkway 250m from Gillhurst Road where there is on-street parking opposite Euan Close. Regular buses run along Hagley Rd, a short distance away.

From Gillhurst Rd,after entering the Walkway,  visitors can either take the immediate right turn along a rough rocky path down to the reserve gate, this path is under water after heavy rain. Alternatively they can take the second and level path on the right for 200m along the top of the embankment till reaching the green reserve fence ,then taking another right down to our gate.

There are benches and picnic tables for those wanting to bring a flask of tea or…

Ringed birds at Harborne Nature Reserve

I spent a couple of hours recording bird sightings on BTO BirdTrack at HNR this afternoon and noticed 3 ringed birds among them: Blue Tit, Robin, and Coal Tit. Unfortunately, the rings were largely unreadable.

All 3 were on the feeder in the upper little meadow. The ringed Robin (assuming it was the same one) was also at the lower feeder nearer the allotment gate.

Are there local projects where they are likely to have been ringed?

Do we often have ringed birds at the reserve?

A city centre oasis

I’d encourage members to visit WMBC Harborne reserve. Whilst small, it offers a diverse environment with a peaceful and relaxing backdrop.

I would ditto that Martin. I went for the first time a few weeks ago to do some photos for the website and I was astounded at how quiet it was being so close to the Birmingham conurbation. The reserve team have done a cracking job with the maze of footpaths. Well worth a visit.
