It’s been a while since we last visited these fantastic reserves, so we’re excited to return to RSPB Newport Wetlands and RSPB Nagshead for a day of birdwatching with WMBC.
Our first stop will be Newport Wetlands, a mix of reedbeds, wet grassland, and open water. At this time of year, we’ll be on the lookout for a variety of warblers, including Reed and Sedge Warblers, as well as the elusive Cetti’s Warbler. There’s also a good chance of spotting Bearded Tits among the reeds, while Marsh Harriers may be soaring overhead. If we’re lucky, we might even hear the deep, resonant boom of a Bittern, a species that has made a remarkable return to the reserve.
Later, we’ll head to RSPB Nagshead, a beautiful oak woodland in the Forest of Dean. This reserve is a haven for woodland birds, and we’ll be hoping to see Pied Flycatchers and Redstarts in their breeding territories. The calls of Wood Warblers should also be echoing through the trees, and with some patience, we may spot Nuthatches, Treecreepers, or even a Great Spotted Woodpecker.
With such a variety of habitats and species, this promises to be an exciting trip. Whether you’re a seasoned birder or just starting out, there will be plenty to see and enjoy. We look forward to sharing the experience with fellow nature enthusiasts!
