Birding for ladies

WMBC LadyBirders is a group for ladies age 18 and upwards to go birding.  We formed in February 2026 and ladies have already made friendships and we have discovered so many talents and personalities amongst our group.  Some of our ladies run walks in their areas of expertise, some make cakes, some expertly spot the birds and some of us photograph (well we’re working on it!!).  We have a marvellous community, lots of laughs and have shared so many special birding moments.  We are a supportive and welcoming group.

Not a member, not a problem!  Please get in touch, you will be most welcome.

About the Ladybirders

The LadyBirders are a group within the WMBC dedicated to supporting our lady members.  We stay in touch via a private dedicated Facebook page and also a very active WhatsApp group.  We arrange many events and field trips that are led by expert walk leaders from within the group.  Our members also arrange their own informal meet ups via the WhatsApp group, so if you want to visit a club reserve or just go for a walk and would prefer to have someone to go with then the Ladybirders are for you.

We tap into a lot of local knowledge as to where certain birds are and we run walks where there are areas of specific interest…. for example Nightjars or Pied Flycatchers.  It’s amazing how much knowledge there is within the club and how willing our members are to share that experience with the LadyBirders.

As a group we have several breaks away planned and there’s a lot of excitement in the air as we plan our itinerary.  We’ve also been on TV!

Meetings and Events

We offer walks and events which cover the  counties within the Midlands - Staffordshire,  Birmingham, Shropshire and south into Warwickshire.  We have ladies from each of the areas and so we try and accommodate everyone.  We are creative with our planning and we are lucky that once people join us they find that there are so many interesting walks and events that they want to join in.

If you would like to learn more about birdlife, meet other lady birders or make new friends, please consider joining us on one of our guided walks.  Details of walks can be found on our private Facebook group and club events on the Club’s website.  You will be given access to the Facebook group when you join us.

We do also attend the club's field trips.  Our members often arrange to meet up on these field trips and we always make new friends as well as visiting spectacular locations around the UK.

Get Involved!

Stay informed about our events through the Facebook and WhatsApp groups as well as the Club Newsletter, emails, the website, and social media.  Whether you’re looking to learn, explore, or contribute to conservation, the WMBC LadyBirders has something for you.

What our members say

MJ: Its been great taking the LadyBirders out on walks around the nature reserves.  Everyone seems so friendly, we can share experiences and knowledge.

S: I found LadyBirders because I was recommended to join a local bird group by British birdwatching for beginners on Facebook.  Once I’d found the West Midland Bird Club, I saw they had a ladies only group, which was really appealing and I’ve never looked back.  Wonderful bunch of ladies.  Incredibly helpful, knowledgeable and super friendly 😊

A: I joined a walk, knew no one and I instantly felt welcome.  Like seeing old friends again.  Birds and going birding is such good fun and it's even better with friends.

D: Since joining the LadyBirders, I can honestly say it has truly been an amazing experience.  I am able to share my passion for wildlife, nature and birding with a group of amazing like-minded  women.  We all share our knowledge and experiences encouraging and empowering each other.  It doesn’t matter if you are a seasoned birder or new to it.  All are welcome as we share a common bond.  I have travelled to places I may not have gone to before.  If you feel alone you won’t with us.

L: I have found the LadyBirders to be the most inspirational group of extraordinary women that I have ever met.  Their genuine zest for life, Birdwatching and all things Nature have become a personal lifeline for me and for this alone I will always be truly grateful.  Being a part of this amazing, friendly, caring and selfless group of Ladies is an absolute privilege, thankyou LadyBirders.

Help us Grow the WMBC Network

We’re looking to expand our network of local branches.

If you’re interested in setting up a new branch in your area we’d love to hear from you.

These groups made a huge contribution to our community before pausing due to changes in local organisation. With the right people involved, we know they could flourish once again. If you have some time, ideas, or just want to know what’s involved, please get in touch, by emailing our secretary, Don Ainsworth at secretary@westmidlandbirdclub.org.uk.

We’ll support you every step of the way.
